"Life is better with pets! I believe that God created pets to be enjoyed as…"

Education: University of Pennsylvania, Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris
Hometown: Shoreline, WA
Pets: Ringo, Cloudy, ChiChi

“Life is better with pets! I believe that God created pets to be enjoyed as companions and to enrich our lives. It is our duty and responsibility to protect and enhance my patients’ physical and emotional well-being as they do naturally for us.”
– Dr. Judy Hung

Dr. Hung knew at the age of seven that she wanted to be a veterinarian. Her family moved from Taiwan to Grants Pass, Oregon, where she was introduced to Spotty the Dalmatian and Jake the Siamese cat. “We also walked past sheep, goats, horses, and cows on the way to school. I was utterly fascinated by these creatures and knew I wanted to become a veterinarian.” Shortly afterwards, her family moved to Shoreline, Washington where she spent most of her time building up her grades and extracurricular activities to be accepted into the prestigious Ivy league school, The University of Pennsylvania. She graduated with a degree in Biology and Economics in 1993, and continued on for four more years at Penn for her doctorate degree in veterinary medicine. During this time, she met Dr. Barbara Deeb while working as a veterinary assistant near Greenlake. Though Dr. Deeb passed away in 2005, she remains an inspiration to Dr. Hung with her compassion and gentle touch for all her patients. After working in Pennsylvania for a couple of years, she moved West and practiced in Anaheim, California, and then finally returned home to the beautiful Pacific Northwest in 2001 where she gained valuable management experience serving as a medical director in Bellevue. In October 2008, she opened Eastside Veterinary Associates in Kirkland just two blocks from the Costco she grew up going to.

Now that her childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian has been realized, Dr. Hung enjoys developing long term relationships with her patients and their owners. She considers herself the pet’s advocate from puppy/ kitten to senior stages. Dr. Hung is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association (WSVMA).

seattleMetLogoEastside Veterinary Associates and Dr. Hung have been named Top Vet by Seattle Met Magazine or Best Vet by 425 Magazine. She is extremely proud of her staff and credits them for helping to make the experience at Eastside Veterinary Associates exceptional.

During her time outside of Eastside Veterinary Associates, Dr. Hung loves to just hang out with her family, made up of her supportive husband, two amazing kids, an Exotic Shorthair Orange Tabby, Gray Persian, 2 retired chickens who make us laugh! She gives presentations to the school children who aspire to be veterinarians someday and volunteers at Lighthouse Christian Church in Bellevue. She wants all kids to know that they have the potential to impact the world in a positive way with their perseverance and passion.

"I don't have pets, I have a mixed-species family."

Education: 1992 Grad, NY State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell
Pets: Three Labradors, ranging from 1 to 12 years old, and one elderly cat.

“I don’t have pets; I have a mixed-species family.”

After nearly 30 years of full-time veterinary practice and over 20 years as a practice owner, I am very happy to be able to join the EVA team as a part time associate. I enjoy helping people who love their animals as much as I do and working with them to help their animals live their best lives. I especially enjoy working with cats.

I love playing with my dogs, training and competing with my dogs in dog sports, and spending time with my family on the beach, in the woods, and at Sniffspots, far away from other people and dogs. I also am an avid amateur photographer, primarily interested in animal action photography and candid animal portrait photography.

My cats have all been adopted from veterinary hospitals or rescue groups where they were abandoned due to medical needs. Since I became active in dog agility over 25 years ago, my dogs have all been from breeders who focus on producing working and performance Labradors. The dogs are all aspiring, active, or retired performance dogs, training and competing in agility, scent work, dock diving, and more.

“Preventive medicine isn’t just for people. Keeping animals healthy ultimately..."

Education: University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, DVM and MPH (2019)
Hometown: Oak Ridge, Tennessee
Pets: Two cats: Lumos and Possum

“Preventive medicine isn’t just for people. Keeping animals healthy ultimately helps keep humans healthy.” -Barbara Natterson-Horowitz in Zoobiquity

I grew up and went to veterinary school in East Tennessee before moving west. I practiced for several years in Phoenix, Arizona before deciding to move closer to family and practice in Washington. I joined Eastside in the summer of 2022 and am so excited to be a part of this wonderful team who serves the animals of our community so well. My favorite areas of practice are preventive care, internal medicine, ophthalmology, behavior, and promoting the bond between owner and animal.

My cat, possum was a bottle-fed baby who I have had since she was a week old. At that point, she looked more like a possum than a kitten, so the name stuck!

Outside of work, I love to run, hike, and cook/bake.

Hometown: Phoenix, AZ
Pets: 2 dogs: Ryder – Australian Cattle Dog Mix, Rocco – Rottweiler Mix (adopted from Renton Animal control); cat: Stanley

“Nature is cruel, but we don’t have to be” – Temple Grandin

This is my first position after vet school. I was born and raised in Arizona, and moved for my husband’s job. I have a big interest in internal medicine, dermatology, and preventative care. I am excited to join the NVA team and practice high quality medicine.

Enjoy exploring the outdoors of my new home, visiting new restaurants, and traveling. Ryder was a surgical patient in vet school that was up for adoption and I couldn’t resist adopting him!

"The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body of each is different".

Education: National Taiwan University, Taiwan – Master of Science (June 2011), Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) (June 2009)
Hometown: Taiwan
Pets: Snowball- 10 years old Maltese, Autumn- 9 years old Calico

“The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body of each is different.”

Outside of work, I enjoy movies and TV shows, weight training, and hiking.

We adopted Snowball from our in-laws. They were not able to take care of her due to their health condition. She was intact, had several mammary gland tumors and severe dental disease. She recovered from the surgery well and has been very healthy since then.

Autumn was 8-week old kitten when I rescued her. She was abandoned and had severe respiratory infection. She recovered very well with our care and we decided to keep her. We named her from the color pattern looks like leaves in Autumn.

"Our pets lend a touch of grace to our lives. They teach us the real meaning of..."

Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine – Cornell University, College of Veterinary Medicine
Hometown: Honolulu, Hawaii
Pets: Huckleberry (cat), Rowan (dog), Juniper, (dog), Lyra (cat), Zinnia (dog)

“Our pets lend a touch of grace to our lives. They teach us the real meaning of unconditional love and bring out the kindest and most generous impulses of humanity.” – Dr. Marty Becker

Dr. Kira Wong grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, moved to the east coast for college and has lived on both the west coast and the east coast since then! She worked full time as a veterinary assistant for over 3 years before moving to Ithaca, NY to attend Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. While in veterinary school, she worked as an emergency service assistant for 3 years, which gave her valuable exposure to everything from traumas to ear infections… as well as the odd ball python or turkey!

Her passions include preventative care, cat and dog behavior, and most of all working with families to find the best plan for both the pet AND the humans who live with them. Dr. Wong is excited to be part of the Eastside family!

In her free time, you’ll usually find her hiking in the woods, or training and competing with her dogs in dog sports. She enjoys fostering kittens and other animals for local rescue organizations, as well as home improvement projects.

Rowan and Juniper are both shelter mutts, and currently train and compete in agility to varying degrees. Huck is a brainless but friendly orange cat, and Lyra (an extremely sweet fluffy tabby cat) is the only foster-fail of the household after being found with a broken leg.

“Veterinarians don’t just treat animals, they treat the people who love them.”

Education: Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine
Hometown: Bellevue, WA
Pets: Willie (cat), Noodles (chihuahua mix), Coco (maltipoo)

“Veterinarians don’t just treat animals, they treat the people who love them.”

This is my first job after vet school. I grew up in the Bellevue area and attended UW for undergrad and WSU for vet school. I am excited to join the EVA/NVA family and practice so close to home.

Outside of my job, I enjoy various indoor and outdoor activities such as going on walks, hiking, ice skating, dancing, and traveling. I also love spending time with family, friends, and my partner.

The day after I graduated from vet school, the cat distribution system worked its magic and Willie appeared outside my doorstep. And the rest is history. Coco is a 10 year old maltipoo who I’ve had since I was young. He is the family dog now and definitely loves my mom more than me.

Education: Bachelor of Science: Michigan State University (May 2020), DVM: Midwestern University, Phoenix, Arizona (May 2024)
Hometown: Shelby Township, MI
Pets: My American Bulldog, Pi

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself.”  Josh Billings

I am originally from Shelby Township, Michigan, and received my undergraduate education at Michigan State University. I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Zoology. I then received my DVM from Midwestern University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in Phoenix, Arizona. I enjoy preventive medicine, urgent care and physical therapy/rehabilitative medicine.

While I loved my time in the desert, my fiancée and I decided that the PNW would be our next adventure together! I enjoy exploring the city for great food and experiencing the art and culture. I also love taking my dog on hikes and tearing up the trails together!

I adopted Pi when I was in college at Michigan State. She has been by my side ever since.

“There is no better way to learn about compassion, empathy, and unconditional...

Pets: Goma (the Pomeranian, possibly long haired Chihuahua mutt)

“There is no better way to learn about compassion, empathy and unconditional love than by having a pet.”

My first experience with Eastside Veterinary Associates came as a pet owner.  The entire staff of EVA took care of our beagles in their old age and last days with so much love and care.  A few years later, Dr. Judy had a puppy come in that needed a home and she called me because she knew he would fit right into our family.  Not only did we get a puppy, she also hired me to help out with the hospitals.  I like to think that I’m a utility person for the hospitals.  I manage inventory, I troubleshoot computer problems, I maintain the website and I sometimes sew things for the hospitals and cook lunch for the staff.

Outside of work, I am mostly busy taking care of my three sons.  I also enjoy playing tennis, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and cooking.

Goma means sesame in Japanese. Dr. Judy thought he was going to be a tiny dog, so we named him Kuro Goma, black sesame seed. Goma is no longer a tiny puppy, but a scrappy fifteen-pound ball of crazy energy with a marvelous tail.  He has a special relationship with each member of our family and with our couch.

“If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life” – Marc Antony
I have been at EVA for a short time, but I have worked with animals for the past 9 years. I enjoy the passion and compassion that is expressed each day at work, but the entire team, is why I come back each day.
When I am not at EVA, I coach competitive and recreational gymnastics along with youth soccer. I also play soccer twice a week. My husband, five kids and two and 1/2 grandchildren take up the rest of my free time.
Two of my dogs Harley and Bandit (Both motorcycle brands) were foster fails from Homeward Pet. Hot Rod was entrusted to me after a former colleague passed away. He got his name, because he likes to escape and run!!

“I’ve lived my whole life with animals valued as family, and in recent years, firsthand seeing countless cats and dogs ending up in shelters with a lack of care from their past has been an issue. I believe in the importance of educating clients on the care needed to keep their cats and dogs in good health and the difference quality preventative care can make. My pets have always been there when I was sick for comfort, so we need to be there for them since they don’t have a voice to say when something is wrong.” Sarah McFarlane

“This too shall pass.“

Pets: Lana, a short-legged shepard mix; Chewbacca, a long-haired tortie; Julien, a very fat Turkish Van; Diggy and Darcy, little gerbil girls; and Rosie, a fluffy-eared teddy bear hamster.

“This too shall pass.” – 12th-century Persian poets Attar and Sanai, but also my mom.
I moved from Virginia Beach with my husband and two children in summer of 2017, and started working at EVA in the fall that year. I’ve worked at various veterinary practices over the years, starting with my first job ever as a kennel assistant when I was 15. I immediately knew that whatever I did in life, it would have to be in the service of animals and their loving people. Being here at EVA and working with those that feel the same passion as I do means the world to me.
How I ended up with Julien: I went shopping for shoes, I came home with a cat.
The local SPCA had an adoption event set up outside the mall I frequented, and I actively tried to avoid them on my way out; I had enough pets. I passed by this huge fluffy cat curled up in his little bed in his cage, and with a reluctant sideways glance, I immediately knew we belonged together. Fighting that thought, I drove home, crying the whole way, knowing I was being ridiculous. As soon as I got home, my husband saw how embarrassingly distraught I was and insisted on driving me right back to the shelter setup to get him.
We’ve been together ever since. He chases the other pets, is constantly underfoot, yells when he’s bored, and gorges all my other cats’ prescription food, but he’s my baby.

"You cannot share your life with a dog…

Pets: Peka, an Old English Sheepdog

“You cannot share your life with a dog… or a cat, and not know perfectly well that animals have personalities and minds and feelings.” – Jane Goodall

One of the most amazing things about working with animals is that you are always learning!

I am just starting at EVA. I have volunteered at the Humane Society while going to Santa Clara University, and have spent a lot of time at Our Lady of the Rock Monastery working with rare-breed animals.

My personal hobbies include photography and dance! I spent two years as a yearbook photographer in high school and college. I’ve been dancing for over a decade, although more for fun than competition. I also enjoy exploring beautiful places and traveling. In fact, I just got back from a month-and-a-half trip to Europe.

My family adopted Peka because unfortunately, she did not mesh well with another family who had multiple dogs. When we got Peka, we only had one other dog named Darwin (a Bearded Collie), who has now passed. We offered to take her in if she got along with him, and she did! She now happily lives in Hawai’i with my parents.

Pets: Stinkybeans (Beans for short)

“There is a belief that until a human learns to love an animal, there is a part of themselves that remains unawakened. Animals have taught me what it means to be human and what it means to have a genuine connection in my life. They hold a special place in my heart, my work, and my home.”

I am very excited to start a career in the veterinary field as a vet receptionist, having come from a background of customer service and retail. I love connecting with clients and doing what I can to ensure they feel heard and that their experience is great.

Outside of my job, I am a person of many hobbies. I draw, paint, tattoo, mess with woodworking, read books, write poetry- just anything that is art. I am also a fan of going to the movies with my nephew and playing fetch with my cat, Stinkybeans.

My cat’s name is Stinkybeans. I have a food thing when it comes to naming my pets. When I was younger, I had two cats named Spaghetti and Burrito, so he was going to be GreenBeans to continue the food thing- but it became Stinkybeans. I was gifted him by a friend whose cats unexpectedly had kittens, and I had just moved into my own place. My home did not feel like a home until he started chasing me around. My every morning starts off by moving him from off of my stomach (where he absolutely has to sleep every night), and I wouldn’t want to wake up any other way.

I am an advocate for each animal who can not speak for themselves. I have always rooted for the underdog, my husband calls it my soft spot for the “weak and oppressed”. I want to  make sure every animal is loved, well cared for, and comfortable.” – Mary Fix-Hofilea

How: By Client education, working with patients to keep them healthy, solving problems with clients and helping build that bond and making sure the family life is the best it can be.

What: I work in a practice with great medicine to ensure a healthy or comfortable pet. The practice allows for plenty of time for client discussions and education via phone, email or appointments. It allows for time spent with each patient to make sure they are getting the best possible care they can.

Licensed Veterinary Technician Mary Fix-Hofilena has been with Eastside Veterinary Associates since October 2008 and has been in the animal care field since 1996. She earned her Veterinary Technician License for Washington State when she started working with Dr. Hung in 2001. Asked what she enjoys most about her work, Mary says “The friendly, warm, family environment to work in. We get to come to work each day knowing we are providing excellent care for our patients.”

At home, Mary has a Border Collie mixed breed dog named Slyder and a flock of chickens in her backyard. She spends her days off volunteering at her son and daughter’s school, organizing their swim team, and shuffling them to various activities. Mary enjoys cooking, swimming, hiking, golf, biking, and reading.

“All the creatures should be treated with love and respect including our furry friends...“

Pets: Macky the cat

All the creatures should be treated with love and respect, including our furry friends and humans (and spiders! Hey, you over there, don’t frown. They are good guys 🙂
I try to remember that every day as I interact with patients, patients’ families, and coworkers.
I grew up in Japan, where I volunteered at a museum and an animal rescue group. I was also a national park ranger/researcher, and worked at a small animal hospital after graduating from University. I moved to Seattle and had different jobs while learning English. After I became more familiar with this culture and comfortable with the language, I found my passion for working with animals again. I worked at a small animal practice and an Emergency room. In 2017, I coincidentally met Dr. Hung at a seminar, who was looking for a Licensed Vet Tech at that time. We started talking, and before you know it, I became one of the team members of Eastside Veterinary Associates. Time flies.
When I’m not working, I spend time with friends, go out social dancing (Lindy hop, Blues, Tango, etc.), hiking, camping, and cuddle up with my fur baby. And oh yes, I enjoy good food!
Macky was tiny.
Found in a dumpster.
Renton animal control officer brought him in.
He had strong lungs.
He had weird sparse long white hair all over and crazy white ear hair sticking out.
I fell in love.
Decided to adopt.
Got rid of Giardia.
I was happy to take him from the hospital.
The day after I brought him home, I realized he had ringworm!!
After a few months of treatment battle, he was ringworm-free! At last!!
Due to the treatment, or his natural growth process, who knows, but he lost most of his signature white long hair and became just a black medium-haired cat!!
I joke sometimes that I didn’t sign up for just a black cat.
He is a brat but I love him nonetheless.

When I’m not cuddling with the furbabies or taking them on hikes, I love cooking and gaming! Video games may have introduced me to the love of my life, but my two dogs’ approval gave me all of the confirmation I needed.

My adopted animals come from all over the country! Nikita from Alabama, Pippa from Kentucky, and Pennywise from Washington. And yes, I do give them all accents.

"I always had a soft spot for animals growing up, especially in elementary school..."

Pets: Maui (Mini Aussie Shepard)

“I always had a soft spot for animals growing up, especially in elementary school. I thought that I would like to help out in any way I can, and that means to take school and my career seriously.”

Before I started at EVA, I was a self-employed dog walker while having some other jobs working for Target. I enjoyed having one-on-one moments with animals and getting to know their personalities.

I enjoy playing the piano and learning new things in my classes. I also like to travel a lot, especially to California and Japan.

My pet is actually our family’s pet! His name is Maui, and he is a Mini Aussie Shepard. He just turned two this year. He is my brother’s dog who he had adopted when Maui was still a puppy until my brother moved back and now lives with my mom and sister. He got his name from one of the locations in Hawaii.

I go to school at Lake Washington High and enjoy rock climbing, playing music, and being a boy scout.

We adopted our cats from Seattle Humane. Ashley spends all of her being a pretty princess. Shadow likes to watch the birds and is a bit stinky.

"All animals are deserving of unconditional love. "

Pets: Kuma – Samoyed husky

“All animals are deserving of unconditional love.”

I have loved every second working here; the hardworking staff and the wonderful animals make every day worth it.

I love reading and listening to music, plus going on hikes.

We adopted my dog through a website called Home To Home, which is an online platform that allows pet owners to directly re-home their animals. Luckily, we discovered Kuma and she has been a part of the family since!
